Ohio Seeks to Embrace Alyssa’s Law for Schools: Enhancing Safety with Status Solutions’ Grant of Use Program

How Wearable Panic Alert Devices and Situational Awareness Technology Can Transform School Safety with Ohio Senate Bill 313

As a former educator and current employee at Status Solutions, I am deeply committed to enhancing the safety of our schools. The introduction of Senate Bill 313, known as Alyssa’s Law, in Ohio represents a significant step toward protecting students and staff by mandating wearable panic alert systems in schools.

Understanding Alyssa’s Law

Alyssa’s Law is named in memory of Alyssa Alhadeff, a 14-year-old student who tragically lost her life during the 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. The law requires the implementation of silent panic alarms in schools to expedite emergency response times during critical incidents. Several states, including New Jersey, New York, Texas, Tennessee, Utah, Oklahoma, and Florida, have already enacted versions of this legislation.

Senator Michele Reynolds introduced Senate Bill 313 in Ohio on September 10, 2024. If passed, it would require public and chartered nonpublic schools to equip staff with wearable panic alert devices by the 2025-2026 school year. These devices would integrate with local emergency services, ensuring immediate communication with law enforcement during emergencies.
